Everyone always says they want to move down here – it makes us feel privileged to actually be here all year round! There is so much more to this county than meets the eye. You may think that Devon is synonymous with beaches and good weather, and it is! But there is so much more. History, culinary passion, culture, eclectic wildlife… Devon really does have it all. Every day is Devon Day for us, so we thought we’d share our favourite things about Devon…

Historical Devon

History. After all, it’s how Devon Day came about. It’s St Petroc’s Day (not to be confused with St Patricks Day…) St Petroc is the patron saint of Devon. There are many dedications to St Petroc across the county, namely within the roman walls of Exeter. However, this isn’t the only thing historic about Devon. For example, did you know Agatha Christie found a lot of inspiration from living in Devon for her world famous novels? The dramatic settings and powerful backdrops definitely influenced her style of writing and helped form some of her most iconic novels.

Beautiful landscape

You will struggle to find anywhere with a more diverse landscape than Devon. The rolling hills of Dartmoor, the stunning English Riviera, the cobbled Roman ruins of Exeter as well as the stunning cliffs across South Devon. Devon really does have it all. Many of our guests have remarked about how eclectic Devon is, noting that not one place looks the same. Cofton is the perfect holiday destination for any explorer, located right in the heart of Devon.

Sumptuous food

We are blessed with a natural wealth of produce right on our doorstep. We’re proud of how we use local ingredients and when dining at Cofton, we’ve put together our food map on our menu. We source our meat, veg, dairy and as many ingredients as we can locally. Devon is popular for its cream teas (cream first, then jam on top), ice cream,  a wide range of confectionary, as well as the wealth of seafood that is available right on our doorstep. Devonshire ale and cider has also started to become a lot more popular due to the amount of pubs and bars that support local breweries.

Devon culture

Us Devonians are a proud bunch. But we also like to think we are friendly, too! (We hope we are, anyway…) I’m not sure what it is that makes Devon one of the best places to live, but perhaps it is having that ability to sit back and relax whenever it’s needed. The best thing about the friendly nature of Devonians is that it spreads across the whole county, all the way from the cities to the smallest villages. Devon’s not only great to visit, it’s also the best place to live, too!

Native wildlife

Nature reserves, national parks, internationally recognised zoos. Devon really is the wildlife capital of the UK. Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve is right on our doorstep at Cofton giving you access to untouched wildlife and nature. And if you’re really passionate about nature, there is nowhere better to explore than Dartmoor. Granite tors, steep wooded river valleys as well as swathes of moorland. It’s a land of contrasts and we bet you’ll never forget it, whether you visit for peace and tranquility or to use the landscape for exploration and something physical.

These are our favourite things about Devon. What are yours?
