Exe Estuary Walk

The Exe Estuary Walk is part of the larger Exe Estuary Trail, which connects the seaside town of Exmouth with the historic city of Exeter, covering approximately 26 miles. This particular section between Exmouth and Lympstone is one of the most popular and accessible, offering a scenic and relatively flat route that’s suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including families with young children and those with mobility challenges.

Starting from Exmouth, the trail meanders alongside the River Exe, providing stunning views across the estuary. As you make your way along the path, you’ll pass through the quaint village of Lympstone, known for its charming cottages and picturesque harbour. This section of the trail is well-surfaced, making it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and it’s a popular choice for cyclists as well.

The walk offers plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, especially around the Bowling Green Marsh RSPB Nature Reserve, which is a short detour from the main trail near Topsham. The marsh is a haven for birdlife, with a variety of wading birds, ducks, and other waterfowl making it their home. Interpretive panels along the route provide information about the local wildlife and history, enriching the experience for curious visitors.

Whether you’re interested in a leisurely stroll, a more vigorous walk, or a family day out, the Exe Estuary Walk has something to offer. The combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and the peaceful ambiance of the estuary makes it a delightful way to spend a day in South Devon.
