The Dawlish to Teignmouth walk is approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long and is suitable for walkers of all ages and abilities, though there are some steep sections and uneven ground. This section of the South West Coast Path begins in the charming town of Dawlish, known for its sandy beaches and the famous black swans that reside in the town’s central Brook. As you set off, the path offers spectacular views of the coastline, with the dramatic cliffs and the sea stretching out before you.
One of the highlights of this walk is the unique combination of natural beauty and man-made marvels. As you approach Teignmouth, you will walk alongside the historic railway line, famous for being one of the most scenic coastal railway routes in the UK. The railway, which has been in operation since the 19th century, hugs the coastline closely, often with just a seawall separating the tracks from the sea. It’s a great spot for train enthusiasts and photographers alike.
The walk also takes you through tunnels carved into the cliffs and along the edge of red sandstone cliffs that are iconic in this part of Devon. These cliffs, which date back to the Triassic period, add a striking contrast to the blue of the sea, making this a particularly picturesque section of the coast path.
Upon reaching Teignmouth, you can explore this vibrant town known for its historic Georgian buildings, beautiful beaches, and bustling harbour. The town has plenty of cafes and restaurants, making it a great place to relax after your walk.
