Competitive Match Fishing, Close Finals and Community Spirit

If you are searching for fishing holidays in Devon, coarse fishing lakes in the UK, or a match fishing competition in the South West, Cofton Holidays continues to deliver an experience that combines competitive angling with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

This year’s spring Cofton Cup brought together anglers from across the country for a structured, week-long coarse fishing competition, featuring exciting qualifiers, tactical peg draws and closely fought finals across all categories.

A Match Fishing Format That Keeps Everyone Competing

The bi-annual Cofton Cup is designed to keep anglers engaged from start to finish, which sets it apart from many traditional UK fishing matches.

The week is built around three qualifying days, each with 15 anglers competing across Cofton’s well-stocked coarse fishing lakes in Devon. From each day:

  • 5 anglers progressed to the Cofton Cup Final
  • 5 anglers moved into the Plate Final
  • 5 anglers competed in the Spoon Final

This format ensures that every competitor has something to fish for throughout the week, making it ideal for both experienced match anglers and those newer to competitive coarse fishing.

The Surprise Story of the Week: Peg 7

Every angler knows that peg draw can influence the outcome, and this year one peg became the main talking point.

Peg 7, traditionally considered one of the more challenging spots across Cofton’s fishing lakes, completely turned expectations on their head. Producing consistently strong weights throughout the week, it quickly went from a peg anglers tried to avoid to one they were hoping to draw.

It is a great example of what makes coarse fishing in Devon so rewarding. Conditions, tactics and watercraft can change everything.

Finals Day: Close Weights Across the Board

Finals day delivered exactly what you would expect from a high-quality match fishing event, with tight margins, consistent catches and strong performances across all three competitions.

Spoon Final Results

  1. Mike Wilson – 84.08
  1. Alan Prophet – 75.07
  1. John Simpson – 70.13

Plate Final Results

  1. Andy Everill – 82.03
  1. Lee Moule – 79.05
  1. Marc Barden – 78.08

Cofton Cup Final Results

  1. Andy Woolsey – 94.03
  1. Lee Prophet – 84.04
  1. Steve Prophet

The consistency of weights across all finals highlights the quality of fishing available across Cofton’s lakes and reinforces its reputation as a leading choice for fishing breaks in Devon.

More Than a Competition: Community and Camaraderie

While the fishing was competitive, what defines the Cofton Cup is the atmosphere.

Throughout the week, anglers shared tactics, supported each other and created a welcoming environment that reflects the spirit of UK angling holidays.

A standout moment came with the Inspiration of the Week award, presented to Rupert Hall. He was recognised not only for his efforts on the bank but for the positivity and encouragement he brought to others throughout the event.
